Contrast Policy
In Accordance with Northwestern University’s Office for Protection of Research Subjects, Northwestern University will follow the guidelines for contrast administration set forth by Northwestern memorial Hospital (NMH). Current NHM policy states, “Prior to a radiology exam requiring gadolinium based contrast media all patients will have renal function assessed via estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on the day of the exam (within 24 hours).”
As studies are renewed throughout the year, the IRB is requesting amendments to both study protocols and consents. The amendments are to include information about Gadolinium based contrast agents and the change in blood draw timing, from 30 days to 24 hours prior to scans with contrast. Per IRB personnel, it is acceptable to continue testing within 30 days until your study has been amended, renewed, and approved with the new required language and testing parameters.
The Center for Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CAMRI) has identified two options to obtain eGFR results within 24 hours. These are suggestions and you may have other means; however you need to demonstrate this information before contrast is given.
VENIPUNCTURE
- Establish research account with NMH and note that you will be utilizing NMH lab for Creatinine testing ($2). PI’s responsibility.
- Notify CAMRI staff of NMH research account number.
- CAMRI RN performs blood draw (venipuncture) within 24 hours prior to contrast exam. Allow at least 3 hours for blood draw, specimen delivery to NMH lab, and processing at lab. This will ensure that results are posted in time for MRI scanning.
I-STAT
- Establish research account with NMH and note that Point of Care I-STAT testing will be utilized at NMH ($31). PI’s responsibility.
- Notify CAMRI staff of NMH research account number.
- CAMRI RN starts IV and draws blood sample from IV for I-STAT testing. Allow 30 minutes for IV start, processing, and results.
